"The Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday approved the
registration for Barclays Global Investors' planned silver exchange-
traded fund -- the first such fund to track silver.
SEC spokesman John Heine said the statement has been "declared
effective," clearing the way for the securities to be sold in the
markets.
The fund begins trading Friday on the American Stock Exchange.
Barclays spokeswoman Christine Hudacko said it is the first exchange-
traded fund to be tied to silver."
